10 and a Half Things I Miss About Living in Pamplona, Spain

It has been six months since I left Spain and reflecting on the good times, I've come up with a list of things that I most miss about my life in Pamplona. Though I was sad to leave, I'm glad I had the opportunity to live there.

Friends

People can make any place, good or bad, seem amazing. And when you finally surround yourself with people who make you happy, well... they'll make you happy! I had a great group of core friends, and many acquaintances who could be called upon to go out for something fun. Another plus for me was that I had a roommate that I really got along with. We had our own sets of friends and didn't hang out much together outside of the house. But we lived together, so we hung out at home quite a bit. And of course, my girlfriend, who was my friend first, has an adventurous spirit and it was our shared interests in so many different areas that eventually brought us to dating.

Discovering Spanish culture

I enjoy learning new things and experiencing new cultures. The wealth of culture that Spain has is enough to satisfy one for a lifetime. Once you begin to take part in their celebrations and festivals, even if isn't something you'd normally do, you begin to better understand the people with whom you are living. This makes for better relationships and a deeper experience. I still smile everytime I see a tomato and think about La Tomatina, or if I see a roscón de reyes in a movie, I get nostalgic.

Daily Spanish language

I moved to Spain to learn the language. At first it was like drinking water through a firehose, and I struggled to understand and respond. But little by little, I gained vocabulary and confidence, and before I knew it, I could walk into any situation and be comfortable with the language. Watching tv shows, and going to the theaters, I could surely practice listening, as everything is always dubbed. Then, getting into Spanish theatre and watching live performances all in Spanish, gave me a sense of really living in the country.

Pintxos

Pintxos, or pinchos, or delicious portions of food that bring together friends and family, are a mainstay in the culture of Navarra/Pais Vasco and other parts of Spain (where they're called tapas).  There are even contests amongst the bars to see who has the best pintxos in the land. It isn't just the convenience and quality of the food, it's also the social aspect of "going for pintxos" that really makes the concept so memorable.

Cheap wine

I'm not talking about Don Simon, a low-quality cheap wine, but the good stuff that they write magazine reviews about. Wine in Navarra and La Rioja is internationally renowned and when you live close to where they make it, and when you have friends in the business, the price is much cheaper. I was not a big wine drinker before, but I was so impressed by the Spanish wine, that I chronicled drinking it for one full year!

Train with TMax

My weekend hobby of coaching and leading workouts in the park that fruitioned into what I now call my career as a Fitness Professional, all started with a simple desire to train pull ups more and workout outdoors. My au pair family took me to a place, that once I saw it, I knew that I would love to train there: Parque de las Mujeres (Women's Park), which later had its name changed to Parque de las Pioneras (Pioneer Women's Park). Either way, we simply called it Lezkairu, after the neighborhood it was located in.

After just over two years of leading Saturday classes, and about 18 months of running personal and group fitness training programs, it was time for me to leave Spain. Fortunately, the group there enjoyed the idea of Saturday training so much, that they continue meeting for a free workout to this very day under the name Train with TMax.

Hanging out at Plaza del Castillo

For me, this was the most Pamplonian thing to do, go and have a drink or an ice cream in the city's main square. Whether the square was full of random people, tourists, kids, and families, or if there was a concert or book fair taking up the square, it just seemed like the city's livelihood was emanating from this place.

From here, you could even take a walk down Carlos III or Paseo Sarasate and still get that feeling of life and activity. There are a number of other iconic places that I enjoyed visiting like Caballo Blanco with it's views of the mountains, or the immense Ciudadela (and old pentagonal fortress) and the surrounding park.

Weekend excursions

Navarra is a treasure trove of contrasting landscapes (lush jungles in the west, a desert in the south, the sea to the northwest, and mountains in the northeast) and more history than all the textbooks in American public schools combined. Some weekends, after our Train with TMax workout, we would hop in a car and drive no more than 90 minutes and be in some new location that I never knew existed - and many times the Spanish who were with me never knew existed either! I visited over 30 places in Navarra.

My car (the half point)

Haha. I don't really miss my car, but the fact that it was taken away from me in such a dramatic fashion makes me miss it. Plus it adds to my next point.

Riding my bike everywhere

So, guess I don't have a car anymore. But I get loaned a bike and my life changed. At first riding a bike was a pain and I wasn't used to it. But after a few months, I noticed that I was leaner, my cardio was significantly better, and I never had to drive around the block ten times or pay high garage prices for parking. Then I got a basket on my bike and it was on! "What car? I don't need a car!" -Me

Game night

I love board games. My family has always played them and I am convinced they are partly responsible for how intelligent and humble I am today. With my friends I mentioned before, we would get together and play board games and party games. My favorites were Tabú (Taboo with Spanish words), Zombies (with Pol's mood-setting background music), and this one game that you get to buy stuff and I can't remember the name of it but you just have to trust me it's a lot of fun.

Traveling 90 minutes north to go practice French

Before moving to Spain, I had spent a few years in Belgium pursuing a basketball career and learning French. My french was pretty good and I was about as confident in it as I currently am in my Spanish. However, if you don't use it, you lose it. Thankfully, France is only a short drive from Pamplona and I could go to the beach town of Hendaye and practice all the French I wanted, while relaxing at the beach.

I don't need your daggum comments... but if you really want to leave one, go for it ;-)

Amigos

Train with TMax
